The Last King – Zedekiah

Nothing lasts forever if you forget about God.

Today, we’re talking about a king who really messed up. Zedekiah’s story is found way back in the Old Testament in the book of 2 Kings. Back then, God put kings in charge to lead the people. And, God used prophets to tell the people, and the kings, what he wanted them to do. Well, like many kings before him, King Zedekiah didn’t listen to God. He wanted to do things his own way. Zedekiah thought he was more powerful than anyone and he forgot about God. One day, another country came in and took over Jerusalem. Zedekiah was no longer king of Judah. In fact, because of Zedekiah’s pride and disobedience, he went down in history as the last king of Judah ever! Let’s learn from Zedekiah’s story. Don’t be fooled into thinking you can get along without God. Don’t forget who God is and be thankful for all that he’s given you.

  3. Why do you think so many of the Israelite kings forgot about God?
  4. What are some practical things you can do to remember God in your own life?
  5. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-6. This is Moses speaking to the Israelite people. Identify all the things Moses told the people to do. Why is it important to obey God’s rules instead of our own?
  6. How will you apply this lesson to your life this week?
